Wekiva grad signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers


Former Wekiva High School and Youngstown State University wide receiver Damoun Patterson was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers following the organizations recent Rookie Mini-camp. The Steelers announced the roster moves on Monday.

Patterson is one of two undrafted rookie free agents to sign with the Steelers.

"To God be the glory," said Patterson on his Facebook page. "I'm glad to announce that I just signed my rookie contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers #herewego @ Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania."

A big-play receiver for the Youngstown State throughout his career, Patterson caught 32 passes for 555 yards and four touchdowns starting all 11 games last season. He had 20 receptions for 484 yards and two touchdowns in 2016. He was a key contributor on special teams units, with 17 tackles over two seasons, including eight in 2017. He also averaged 17.3 yards per catch...in MVFC games had 28 catches for 497 yards and four scores...caught passes in nine games...had at least four catches on five occasions...had two touchdown grabs at Southern Illinois...hauled in touchdown receptions of 48 and 14 yards in the second quarter at SIU...also had TDs vs. North Dakota State and UNI...at Indiana State caught five passes for 143 yards...caught a season-long 53-yard pass vs. the Sycamores...also had a 52-yard catch at ISU...had five catches for 100 yards at UNI...had a 41-yard TD reception vs. the Panthers...against NDSU, had a 35-yard catch and a 22-yard score between two defenders...had two carries for 28 yards, including a season-long run of 22 yards at South Dakota...was a key member of special teams finishing with eight total tackles (four solos and four assists)...also forced a fumble at SIU...earned his second letter.

If Patterson makes the final roster, he would join a receiving corps that is among the most potent in the National Football League. Wide Receiver Antonio Brown led the Steelers with 1,533 yards and none touchdowns, while rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster added 917 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Running Back Le'Veon Bell also had 655 receiving yards and caught two touchdown passes.
