Four Blue Darters and Two Mustangs make the elite list
Six players from the Apopka Blue Darters and Wekiva Mustang football teams made the 2016-17 Class 8A All-State football teams. Four players from Apopka team and two from Wekiva were named to the elite lists.
Apopka junior offensive lineman Ed Montilus headed the list as a first team selection. Montilus played a vital role in the Blue Darters rushing for over 380 yards per game.
On the second team was Wekiva running back Jaylon Fair who rushed for 1,355 yards and an astounding 19 touchdowns. Two Apopka players made the list as second-team skill players. Apopka senior running back Deshawn Massey rushed for 740 rushing yards and nine touchdowns and signed a letter of intent to play football at Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College. Apopka senior quarterback Demetri Burch rushed for 740 yards and nine touchdowns while leading the potent Blue Darter offense. Burch will play for the University of Oregon next year.
Gaining honorable mention on the list was Wekiva senior wide receiver Wesley Touze and Apopka junior offensive lineman William Barnes.
Apopka finished the season with a 9-1 record, a District 8A-4 title with a 4-0 record, and a trip to the state playoffs. Wekiva finished with a 7-4 record, a second-place finish in District 8A-4 with a 3-1 record and a trip to the state playoffs.
