The Apopka City Council will meet Wednesday night with an agenda that centers on committee appointments, a delayed decision on the Northwest Recreation Complex, and preparations for the upcoming mayoral runoff.

Planning and regional appointments

Council members are expected to consider appointing Malika Harrison to the Apopka Planning Commission to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of longtime member Howard Washington.

Harrison, who recently ran in the Apopka City Commission Seat #4 special election, brings experience in nonprofit leadership, corporate philanthropy, and public affairs. The Planning Commission serves as the city’s Local Planning Agency, reviewing development proposals, zoning changes, and comprehensive plan amendments before making recommendations to the City Council.

The agenda also includes the appointment of a voting member to the MetroPlan Orlando Board, a regional body that helps guide transportation planning and infrastructure priorities across Central Florida.

Northwest Recreation Complex decision returns

The future of soccer programming at the Northwest Recreation Complex is back before the council after being tabled earlier this month.

Council members will consider approving sports field rental agreements tied to a joint proposal from Central Florida Soccer Club and Central Florida United Academy, as well as awarding the associated RFP contract.

The proposal drew significant public comment at the February 18th meeting, with residents raising concerns about field access, maintenance, pricing, and the structure of the agreement. The council postponed a final decision at that time.

Wednesday’s vote is expected to determine how the facility is managed and who will have access moving forward.

Runoff election preparations

With the mayoral race headed to an April 14 runoff, the council will also consider setting early voting dates and times.

The item, presented by the City Clerk, is part of the city’s final steps to prepare for the runoff between Commissioner Nick Nesta and Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore.

The runoff follows a March election in which no candidate received a majority of the vote, and incumbent Mayor Bryan Nelson did not advance.

Early voting schedules and accessibility often play a key role in turnout during runoff elections.

Looking ahead

As the first City Council meeting since voters delivered a reshaped political landscape on March 10, Wednesday’s agenda arrives at a moment of transition. With a runoff ahead and decisions pending on growth and recreation, the meeting offers an early look at how the city will move forward in the transitional weeks following a historic election and the new administration.

Key Points:

  • First City Council meeting since the March 10 election results
  • Planning Commission and MetroPlan appointments on the agenda
  • NW Recreation Complex soccer agreement returns after being tabled
  • Early voting schedule for April 14 runoff to be established
  • The meeting combines policy decisions with the post-election transition
