Apopka Restaurant Feature: Hebers Cuban Cafe

Do you recognize good food when you taste it?

Posted

My dear old mama was an exemplary cook! I mean, she could make a plate of wild greens and freshly caught fish please the most particular palate. And fried chicken? Oh yeah!

I said all that to let you know that the term “finger-lickin’ good” didn’t originate with some rascally reprobate that called himself a "colonel" down south somewhere and also to let you know that I know good food when I taste it!

Several years ago, I was introduced to Heber’s Cuban Cafe located on Hwy. 436 in Apopka Florida.

To be honest with you, I didn’t have any idea what a treat I was in for, but wow, a treat it was, and a treat it continues to be!

I have never been much of a coffee drinker, but if you are like me and you want a real treat, order a large cup of Heber’s café de leche and sit there and sip it, close your eyes, and enjoy!

I want you to know the folks at Heber's Cuban restaurant know how to make an espresso machine do what it was designed to do. Yes, they do!

And did I mention the service?

Yes! You are in for a treat with the service at Heber’s Cuban restaurant, especially if Alexandro or Erles are your servers. These young men go out of their way to make your visit so pleasant it will bring you back time and again.

And did I mention the food?

Make your choice from a broad selection, sip your coffee, and relax in a friendly atmosphere. I know you will enjoy it! Chaz

Lord, please bless this food and the people that serve us. Amen.

My daddy, mama, my fiancee, and I, went to Key West on a road trip, right after I graduated high school. It was to celebrate my mama's birthday, too, as I graduated the same day as her birthday. When we were there in Key West, my daddy went into a little Cuban restaurant to get some coffee. He brought it back, and oh my gosh, my daddy sure could do some cussing when he would get upset, and he sure did that day, when he tasted that Cuban coffee! He spit it out, was cursing worse than a sailor, and I asked, what's wrong daddy? After some more very choice words, he said it was worse than a strong nasty cough syrup, and just nasty! I guess daddy didn't appreciate authentic Cuban coffee, and didn't know what he was getting, but we found out that is the norm for Cuban coffee, very thick, and very strong. Is Heber's Cuban coffee like that, Mr. Towne? We had a pretty good time in Key West, camping, fishing, sight seeing, etc.then my daddy died less than two months later. He got sunburned too, blistered very badly, while fishing, was somewhat crabby, but he was in bad health because of his heart, but later, I realized daddy just really felt horrible because of his condition, but went on this trip all for mama and me to celebrate. I never expected he was going to pass away so soon, after we went down to Key West, for fun and celebration. Yeah, life comes at you fast, when you least expect it.

Dear Mama Mia, yes; I have met a few folks in my life that had a certain flair with the english language and I guess your daddy had a creative way of expressing himself! And to answer your question I do't like nasty tasting food and everything at Heber's is mighty tasty to my way of thinking; Try it, you'll like it! Chaz

You want to remember, coffee is an acquired taste, ad it doesn't necessarily make the meal. You'll like the food. Bon appetite. Clyde Frump

Mr.Towne, I will try Heber's sometime. Maybe the chicken, or the Cuban sub, which is ham and cheese, with mustard and pickles. Now, if it has roasted pork marinated in mojo, I might have to say, leave that part off, for me. I have tried roasted pork with mojo, and did not care for it. I accidently got some, selecting takeout, at another place, a grocery store, and thought it was regular BBQ, but I found out it wasn't. No mo joe, for me, lol. My daddy, God rest his soul, wasn't constantly cussing, only when he was aggravated, or upset, like when we would snicker about how he could cuss out a fly near his food, or cuss out mosquitoes, but daddy contracted malaria in the military, and was very near death, they were preparing him a toe tag, and last rites, so he hated mosquitoes, and yes, flies, big time. Hope you are doing well, keep writing!

Dear Chaz, Is Heber's the same location that used to be a French Cafe? I believe you and i ate there one time but sadly, they went out of business. If it is, it seems that that space has developed a propensity for attracting wonderful restaurants! Personally, I do not like coffee, it is the flavor I detest, not the idea of a caffeinated beverage, so I would order something else to drink but to eat, ah, Cuban food is delicious. It is always good news to find a worthwhile eatery and it seems to me that every culture on this planet has some certain unique food they make better than anyone else!

A Loving God, good friends, and good food, what more could a person want???

Ahhh, Richard, or is it Ricardo? I know what you mean. Coffee, or cafe, is definitely an acquired taste! But the food now, that is something else! This last week our little group of Let's talk Tuesdays friends, met at Heber's Cuban Cafe at 11:30 Tues. A.M. Like you said, "A loving God, good friends, and good food, what more could anyone want?" See you there pal! Chaz
