City Council proclaims National Hispanic Heritage Month

Posted

National Hispanic Heritage Month dates back to 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson designated Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to cover a whole month, beginning on September 15, which marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The month also includes Columbus Day, or Día de la Raza, on October 12.

The Apopka City Council, at its September 18th meeting, officially observed National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th with a proclamation. It's a time dedicated to celebrating the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the nation’s culture and society.

Mayor Bryan Nelson highlighted the significance of the observance.

“Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans, who have enriched our culture and society, helping to shape America into the incredible nation it is today,” Nelson said while reading the proclamation. He emphasized the values of devotion, faith, family, hard work, and patriotism embodied by Hispanic American men and women through their contributions as leaders, innovators, and members of the armed forces.

During the meeting, Vice Mayor Diane Velazquez noted the significant impact of Apopka’s sizeable Hispanic community on local businesses and agriculture.

“I’m a proud Puerto Rican woman, and I’m deeply grateful to serve in the Apopka community,” said Omayra Mansfield, Chief Medical Officer for Advent Health Apopka, reflecting the pride many feel in the community.

In closing the proclamation, Nelson called on all public officials, educators, librarians, and residents of Apopka to participate in activities and ceremonies throughout National Hispanic Heritage Month, encouraging a celebration of the city's rich cultural heritage.
