Apopka Youth Works hosts financial literacy event

Posted

From the City of Apopka

Local high school juniors and seniors enrolled in this year’s Apopka Youth Works summer career education program will get an introductory class Tuesday about financial literacy.

The City of Apopka is partnering with CareerSource Central Florida, CFE Federal Credit Union and Bank of America to introduce AYW participants to money management and smart spending habits. The event also will include games, prizes and a meal for the students beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Apopka Community Center, 519 S. Central Ave.

Apopka Youth Works will include 100 students from Apopka area schools – most who will work for seven weeks this summer at various local businesses, learning employment skills and earning weekly paychecks paid through Apopka Youth Works. Ten AYW students – all from Apopka High School – chose to enroll in a new, ten-week educational program to earn emergency medical technician certification.

Just as important as learning career skills and gaining on-the-job experience, the students also must become more familiar with earning and managing their first paychecks. Tuesday’s event is mixed with fun and learning before Apopka Youth Works officially begins on June 5.

During that first week, Apopka Youth Works and Valencia College will teach essential employment skills such as writing resumes, dressing and performing at work.

Students will get their own bank accounts with paychecks directly deposited. They can monitor their money online. Apopka Youth Works will present an award at the end of the summer to the student who saves the most.

Students also will undergo online computer training through the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Dollarwise program. The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently awarded Apopka Youth Works with a $10,000 DollarWise Summer Youth Campaign Grant to better integrate financial education into its summer youth employment program.

More than 300 students submitted applications for Apopka Youth Works earlier this year. Many were interviewed – much like a job interview – to determine their eligibility.
