Review: Apopka High School's "Neverwhere"

By Lauren Mackey, Staff Writer for The Apopka Voice

The Apopka High School Drama Department truly transports their audience to Neverwhere in their adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s dark fantasy. The cast’s interactions in the rows of the auditorium literally brings the story to life right in front of the audience.

The set seamlessly transforms from London Above to London Below and vice versa, really feeling like two different worlds. From the lighting to the sound effects, each aspect of the design effectively portrays reality and its alternate. Kudos to the crew.

James Rodriguez gives a convincing performance of a simple man whose life gets turned upside down when he meets Door, played by Kaylee Brannen, who portrays a compelling female lead. But it was the supporting characters who stole the show. After his powerful performance in Nosferatu: The Legend of Dracula, David Gomez returns to the stage in an equally dark role as Mr. Vandemar. He and Max Kelly (Mister Croup) have sinister chemistry between their characters.

Sheila Smith’s performance as Hunter captivates with her strength and attitude. Other notable performances include Matthew Zenon as The Marquis de Carabas and Liza Brown, who wowed in two roles as Jessica and The Velvets: Lamia. Overall, the entire cast gives strong performances. The scenes that feature numerous cast members are highlights throughout the show, showcasing the cast’s chemistry.

Don’t miss the opportunity to step foot into Neverwhere this weekend.
