| The role of government is multifaceted with the common purpose to keep the public safe, sound, and strong in an equitable and fair manner as public servants. This is accomplished through an inseparable focus on safety, infrastructure, and stewardship.
Public safety comes first, for without that the rest breaks down. Once general peace and safety are established, infrastructure becomes the focus in a fair and equitable manner without favoritism for any one group over another. None of these things can be accomplished without the proper stewardship of resources. Understanding that the purpose of public taxation is solely for that which benefits all equally is key to good fiscal policy. In the preamble it is called the general welfare, and we must not look to government to solve all social ills, but rather to ourselves as a community, with the government supporting and encouraging such goals as are for the common good. Finally, we must remember our rights come from God not government, as they are "endowed by our creator" and inalienable. Government must in a humble manner protect the rights of all equally. No cronyism, favoritism, or prejudice should cloud our view as we seek liberty and justice for all.

The government is here to serve the citizens. They do this by services such as recreation, safety, representatives, development and protection of our environment. The government is there to listen to the citizens and prioritize what is important to them and take action on those issues. Locally, representatives do a variety of services specific to the area. Our local government advertises our city to others to encourage people to move here and to open business here. They evaluate the need for housing, roads and businesses and help to make sure those needs are met. While doing this, they make sure our environment is protected, including rivers, lakes, air and noise control. The local government provides recreation such as sports, events, and parks. They provide safety such as maintained roads, waste disposal, police and fire departments. Most importantly they provide representatives that have the best interest of the entire community. Overall, the most important role of the government is to be a public servant to all its citizens.

From the earliest times government was meant to protect citizens from harm and to commend those who do well. I also believe government is limited in scope to what individuals cannot do for themselves. Funds spent should have a public purpose.
Thankfully the citizens reflected this understanding during the recent visioning process. Police and fire services polled as their top priority. Unfortunately, though, our police department has never received accreditation. I support the Chief’s efforts in this regard. The 2016 budget includes funding for 10 new police officers with equipment and a fire station. Public purpose and accountability are key for expenditures. This explains my concern over $200,000 of tax money given in early 2014 to a private trust fund. The board members, one being my opponent, for nearly a year refused to release minutes, policies or accounting. I, on the other hand, have insisted on extensive public budget workshops and meeting details posted online. Roads, water, sewer, garbage, lighting, land use, parks & recreation are also a purpose of government. Over the last 21 months, I have championed new sidewalks, park renovations, and a local preference policy. It has been an honor serving Apopka.
