Posted

Updated Breaking News from last night:

Last night at approximately 8:30PM, the Orange County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a 911 call in reference to “shots fired” in the area of Warren Sapp Drive and Monk Avenue in Apopka. OCSO deputies responded and discovered several spent casings lying in the intersection.

The victim, a 15-year-old male, called 911 from an address on Janet Street. According to the OCSO report, deputies responded to Janet Street and met with the victim who reported he was in the area of Monk Avenue and Dew Berry Avenue when the shooting started and he was subsequently struck with a stray projectile. The victim was transported to a local area hospital by the Orange County Fire/Rescue Department in order to be further treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim could not provide any suspect details. There had been conflicting witness reports of a possible suspect vehicle.

It was later learned that the victim of the gunshot wound admitted to OCSO Detectives that he accidentally shot himself in the foot.

He said he was in the area when the shooting started and pulled out a firearm from his backpack. He stated the firearm was for his own protection. While the victim was running away from the area, he accidentally discharged the firearm, causing the non-life-threatening gunshot wound to himself.

The investigation is still on-going and deputies are actively attempting to recover the firearm at this time. This is no longer an aggravated battery via firearm investigation. No charges have been filed in the case.

If anyone has any information in reference to this incident, please contact the Orange County Sheriff's Office or Crimeline. The name of the 15-year-old male is not being released.

This is all of the information available at this time. The Apopka Voice will update this story as additional information is known.
