Wolf Lake's furious rally in County Championship falls just short

Carver edges the Wolfpack 51-45

It was a roller coaster ride for the Wolf Lake Middle School Boys' basketball team this season, and the County Championship game against Carver Middle School was no different. Before a capacity crowd at the Eagles Nest Gym on the campus of Edgewater High School in Orlando, the Wolves fell just short of a County Championship, losing to the Bears 51-45, but claiming the runner-up trophy.

Coach Mark Washington claims the runner-up trophy in the Orange County Championship.

In a game that saw six ties and seven lead changes, the Wolves led by as much as 13 in the first quarter, and trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but rallied to within two points with two minutes remaining in the game. However, their comeback fell short of overcoming Carver's lead.

Wolf Lake Coach Mark Washington guided the Wolfpack this season from a two-win team in 2016, to a runner-up finish in Orange County, which has 48 middle schools that have a boys basketball program.

Despite the disappointment, Washington was proud of his team, and its extended family.

"This is a true testament not only to myself and our committed coaching staff but also to the passionate/hard working players (and managers), dedicated family and community," said Washington. "No matter the circumstance and adversity, these young men have banned together to make this historical run. This has been a magical ride, and these young student-athletes will take these memories with them for the rest of their lives."

Brandon Johnson (8th Grade), and Kaven Call (7th Grade) each scored 17 points for the Wolves, while Nikai Martinez (8th Grade) added eight points and had three key steals that led to points for Wolf Lake. Sixth-grader Tyler Johnson also scored three points for the Wolves.

Wolf Lake finishes their season with an 8-2 record, 5-1 in the regular season and 3-1 in the playoffs.
