The winter is a time rife with germs. The cold brings out all kinds of bacteria and viruses, and dealing with them can get pretty hefty. After all, you’re already feeling run down and exhausted from all that Christmas shopping!
But there’s no need to panic. Getting sick around Christmas time is never going to be fun, but it doesn’t have to be as bad as you might think.
Don’t let the anxiety of being ill during the festive season get to you - follow the tips below and focus on looking after yourself until you feel better again.
Get a flu shot
This is always a great preventative measure during the winter season.
Seeing as rates of the flu shoot up dramatically when it gets cold, getting yourself a flu shot will reduce your chances of transmission as well as limit the intensity of any flu strain you could end up contracting.
After getting a flu shot, you will still be at risk of catching a case of the bug, but the jab will stamp down on how susceptible you’ll be overall.
Do plenty of self care
Self care is perfect for fending off sickness in winter. The classics of home remedies and over the counter treatments can do wonders for a cold, and getting as much rest as possible tends to shorten the time you spend sneezing and blowing a runny nose.
You should also try to get outside a bit more during this time. Being ill makes you feel like you never want to leave the house again, but fresh air and a bit of exercise is very good for you!
Remember, some symptoms can last a lot longer than you think
Sickness symptoms are various, and the rate your body takes to deal with them will vary just as much. And when it comes to long-lasting medical worries, cough symptoms are one of the worst offenders.
Many people can panic over having a persistent cough that’s lasted for longer than just a few days. If you also have a sore throat, this worry is going to have a double impact!
But you need to remember that everyone heals at their own pace, and symptoms like a cough tend to be one of the last to disappear. The sore throat you’re experiencing could be due to the coughing you’re doing, and that could be the last remnants of any cold or flu you’ve had making its way out.
Of course, we’re not medical experts, so if you’re concerned about a cough or any other symptoms with it, be sure to see a doctor. It’s always OK to get something double checked, especially if you can’t stop worrying in the meantime.
If you’re feeling the ticklings of cold and flu this winter, do some self care, get your flu shot, and remember that not all symptoms are terrible signs. And if you want to see a doctor, you won’t waste anyone’s time booking an appointment.
