The 2024 Florida Film Critics Circle (FFCC) awards produced some interesting results. A look at the winners and losers lets us understand some of the key movie trends and which genres are growing.
Science Fiction is still going strong
French romantic drama The Beast won the best film award while Bertrand Bonello was named as best director for this effort. In addition, Léa Seydoux won the Best Actress category. This movie has a classic science fiction theme, as it’s set in 2044, when artificial intelligence has already taken over most of our jobs and humans are faced with the decision of whether to purify their DNA to get rid of their emotions and get a better job.b This isn’t the first time that the FFCC has rewarded sci-fi movies with the top awards. 2016’s Mad Max: Fury Road and 2010’s Inception are among the few films to be given four awards.
This year’s decision ties in with the growing trend for sci-fi movies in general, with Alien: Romulus and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes among the top releases this year. Sci-fi’s enduring popularity can also be seen in TV shows such as Silo and Dune: Prophecy. The genre is also well-represented in casino games, with titles including Starburst and Starmania among the free-to-play slots mentioned here. These games take the classic slot machine approach of spinning reels and add a space theme with futuristic symbols. As in the movie industry, sci-fi is joined by various other popular genres such as the Wild West and ancient cultures in the casino slots category.
Romantic Comedies vs Slapstick
Carol Kane was nominated as Best Actress for her role in Between the Temples, a romantic comedy that features Jason Schwartzman as Ben Gottlieb, a cantor who has lost his ability to sing after a tragedy. Also featured on the list of nominees, Hundreds of Beavers takes a slapstick approach. Directed by Mike Cheslik, it’s based on the type of physical comedy that was popular about a century ago. Ryland Brickson Cole Tews plays Jean Kayak, who gets caught up in a conflict with a huge group of beavers.
The success of both these movies shows that there is still space in the movie industry for different types of comedy. 1996’s Fargo, 2002’s Adaptation, and Sideways from 2004 have all been acclaimed by the FFCC in the past, showing that the panel members appreciate a variety of comedy styles. 2025 will see new comedies released including Novocaine, which takes the physical approach as Jack Quaid plays Nathan Caine, a man who can’t feel pain. You're Cordially Invited stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon in a comedy based on a wedding venue being double-booked.
The films that the FFCC loved and the latest entertainment trends show us that these genres that have been popular for so long are going to continue offering some of the most interesting new movies. This will help to ensure that there are films for every type of person and taste.
