WARNING - IRS Telephone Scams Continue

Telephone calls and letters from the IRS are never pleasant. But when the caller announces that you are the target of a criminal lawsuit, well, it gets your attention.

Here is the message:

"This call is from the Legal Department of the Internal Revenue Service. This is in reference to a criminal lawsuit filed against you. Your case number is CH 76295. The moment you receive this message I need you or your retained attorney of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My phone number is 202-470-6106. Do not disregard this message and do return the call. Now if you don't return the call and if I don't hear from your attorney then the only thing I can do is wish you good luck as the situation totally unfolds on you. Goodbye."

The IRS has issued several warnings about this scam. If the scammers get someone on the phone they will offer to drop the case if you agree to make an immediate payment. DO NO DO IT!

  • When you have a real tax problem, the IRS will first contact you by mail, not by phone.
  • The IRS won’t threaten arrest, deportation or loss of a driver’s license.
  • The IRS won’t demand that you make payment right away.
  • The IRS won’t ask you to wire money, pay with a prepaid money card, or ask you to share credit card information over the phone.
