Updating Breaking News: One dead, three critically injured after a head-on collision in Alachua County

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision in Alachua County yesterday that resulted in the death of a passenger.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 6:04 pm, a 35-year-old Old Town man driving a sedan and a 42-year-old Alachua woman driving a sport utility vehicle collided head-on as the two vehicles approached on County Road 235, south of NW 204th Street.

According to the FHP, the investigation revealed that the at-fault driver was traveling southbound and passed another vehicle on a double yellow, no passing zone. All occupants from both vehicles were transported to UF Shands for critical injuries, which included both drivers and a 14-year-old girl from Alachua.

The right front passenger (a 61-year-old Crystal River man) was declared deceased at Shands Hospital.

The incident is ongoing and is being investigated. County Road 235 was closed for several hours to conduct the investigation.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the collision.
