Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a multi-vehicle collision in Hillsborough County yesterday that resulted in the death of a driver.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 11:25 am, a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 56-year-old Gainesville woman and a Mazda 6 driven by a 30-year-old Brooklyn, NY woman were traveling southbound on Interstate 75 in the inside and center lanes, respectively. South of Fowler Avenue, the first vehicle entered the center lane and collided with the second.
The first vehicle was redirected to the median, where it collided with a guardrail, overturned, and entered the northbound lanes of I-75.
Once in the northbound lanes, it collided with a Kia Sorento driven by a 57-year-old Riverview woman, which was traveling northbound on I-75 in the outside lane.
Debris from this collision struck a Honda Civic, driven by a 72-year-old Rockville, MD woman traveling northbound in the center lane.
After colliding with the third vehicle, the first vehicle continued until colliding and coming to a final rest on top of the outside guardrail.
The first driver suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. The third driver reported minor injuries to the FHP.
The crash closed the northbound lanes of I-75 until 5:00 PM.
The FHP did not release the drivers' names involved in the collision.
