Step grandfather to be charged with kidnapping

Updated at Noon - Makayla Fisher, an 11-year-old Apopka resident who was reported missing this morning, was found in good health around 10:30 a.m. after a citizen told deputies her location. Fisher, who lived with her grandmother since birth, was taken by her step grandfather, Darrell Mills, 50, from her Apopka home at 2:15 a.m. according to the OCSO.

The OCSO was made aware of an altercation at Fisher's home by a neighbor who called to report it around the time it took place. Upon arrivel, deputies were made aware of Fisher's abduction, and released a reverse-911 call to neighbors, notifying them of the incident, said Jane Watrel, Public Information Officer for the OCSO.

The Amber Alert was issued at 7:33 a.m.

Deputies said they believe Mills took off into the woods with Fisher. Officials were unsure of the exact location where the two were found, but said it was in the area where the search was taking place.

The OCSO cancelled the Amber Alert at 11:10 AM and thanked the community for its help in finding Fisher.

"We are grateful to the citizen who recognized the suspect and victim and flagged down one of our deputies," Watrel said. "Thank you for your assistance."

Mills was taken into custody by the OCSO where he is expected to be interviewed, booked into the Orange County Jail, and charged with kidnapping according to Watrel.


Missing Child case resolved

Updated at 11:15am - The Orange County Sheriff's Office has cancelled the Amber Alert in regards to the missing Apopka girl Makayla Fisher. According to the OCSO, Fisher has been located and the matter is resolved. This is a breaking story and it will be updated as more details are known.


At approximately 2:15 am this morning, Makayla Fisher was taken from her residence on Elderton Drive in the Lake Opal Estates Subdivision in Apopka. She was seen wearing a light multi-colored tank top.

Makayla is a black female, 11-years-old, 5'4", 127 pounds with grey eyes, shoulder length black hair, and maroon braids.

Fisher was last seen the company of Darrell Mills, who is a 50-year-old black male 6'1", 220 pounds with a military style buzz haircut, wearing no shirt and tan pants.
