Updating Breaking News: Driver dies after a two-vehicle collision in Sumter County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision in Sumter County yesterday that resulted in the death of a driver.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 6:05 PM, a Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 38-year-old Summerfield man, was traveling southbound on US-301 at a high rate of speed. 

At the same time, a Dodge Charger, driven by a 51-year-old Ocala man, was traveling southbound on US-301 ahead of the first vehicle. 

As they approached, both vehicles were traveling in the inside travel lane. South of SE 180th Street, the first vehicle overtook and attempted unsuccessfully to pass the second vehicle. As a result, the two vehicles collided. 

Upon impact, both vehicles rotated into the center median, with the first vehicle overturning multiple times. 

The driver of the first vehicle was ejected and suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. 

The second driver, as well as a 51-year-old Ocala woman traveling as a passenger, suffered minor injuries. 

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash.
