Updating Breaking News: Apopka game cancelled; no date set for completion

Blue Darters led 14-6 at halftime, but lightning delay eventually leads to postponement

Updated at 10:40 PM - After a two-hour lightning delay, the game between Apopka and Miami Norland High Schools was cancelled with Apopka leading 14-6 at halftime. According to the pressbox announcer, both schools agreed to complete the game at a date to be determined.

It was a beautiful night for football at Roger Williams Field on the campus of Apopka High School. Mild temperatures with a nice breeze and an overcast sky held on for two quarters.

But then the bottom fell out of the sky.

The Apopka Blue Darters took a 14-6 halftime lead against the Miami Norland Vikings before rain and lightning intervened. A mandatory evacuation of the field cleared-out a capacity crowd in the Blue Darter's opening home game of the season. Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries; the last coming on a 7-yard touchdown run with 33 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Senior cornerback Chance Bush filled in as running back and ran for 32 yards on eight carries.

Hamilton capped off Apopka's second drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, followed by a Bush two-point-conversion run that gave Apopka an 8-0 lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter. The Blue Darter defense once again shined, particularly inside the 20-yard line where they stopped Norland three times on fourth down. However with 4:41 left in the second quarter, senior quarterback Alec Carr ran 50 yards, and then threw a 13-yard touchdown pass, however the two-point conversion attempt was stopped by Apopka, who kept an 8-6 lead.

On the Blue Darter's final drive of the half, Hamilton gave Apopka breathing room after a late hit pushed them back to their own 10-yard line when he ran for 25 yards to the Blue Darter 35 yard line. Five plays later Hamilton hit Bush on a short pass, but Bush broke two tackles to gain 20 yards and gave the Blue Darters a first down at the Viking 30 yard line. Three plays later, Hamilton scored his second touchdown of the evening on a 7-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked, which gave Apopka a 14-6 lead.
