UF/IFAS offers classes on Florida lawns and landscaping in April

UF/IFAS Extension Orange County provides education and information to residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media in the areas of family life, youth development, natural resources, horticulture, and agriculture. Current classes/events are listed on our events calendar.

First Time Homebuyer Workshop - ENGLISH 4/4 & 4/11 (Online)

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this 2-part online class offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez. This homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs.

Money management, renters’ rights, eviction prevention, and more! Offered via Zoom by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez, this class is for residents looking for income-based assistance programs, anyone wanting to become a more savvy renter and residents wanting to apply for the Our Florida Rental Assistance Program.

Creating a Florida-Friendly Landscape - North Orange Branch Library (In Person)

April is Water Conservation Month! UF/IFAS Extension Orange County has partnered with Orange County Utilities to host an Introduction to the Florida Friendly Landscaping™ Program. Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Clarissa Chairez, this class will teach you to how to make better decisions in your landscaping practices with tips to guide you in plant choice, irrigation practices, fertilizer applications and pest control.

Beekeeping 101 – Is Beekeeping for Me? (Online)

Come learn if beekeeping is for you! In this very beginner class presented via Zoom by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough, you'll learn about the important agricultural role honey bees play, how much it costs to get started, and the legality of keeping bees in your area. Beekeeping 201 – Beekeeping Basics (In Person)

Come learn about the awesome hobby of beekeeping! Presented by Multi-County Extension Agent JK Yarborough at the UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County in Sanford, you will learn about a Langstroth hive, the colonies’ caste system, how to acquire bees and more! True first-time beekeepers are encouraged, but not required, to attend Beekeeping 101 before this class.

Beekeeping 201L – Hitting the Hives (In Person) 

Multi-County Extension Agent JK Yarborough is presenting a hands-on follow up to Beekeeping 201* at the UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County in Sanford. You will learn how to light a smoker, choose the proper PPE for you, go through a routine hive inspection, do a varroa shake, and more! *Completion of Beekeeping 201 is required prior to taking this class.

Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Calvin Gardner, this webinar will provide suggestions on ways to keep Florida lawns healthy and well-maintained through the summer. We will cover several popular types of Florida turfgrasses and some of their infamous pests and diseases. We will also discuss some of the store-bought products for lawns and their effectiveness.

Green Industries Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) (Online)

A science-based educational program for lawn care and landscape maintenance workers. Pre-requisite for the Urban Fertilizer License. Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hannah Wooten, this class covers proper fertilization, pest control, irrigation, and cultural practices for landscape and pest control professionals.

Guided Garden Tour (In Person) 

Come for a guided tour of our UF/IFAS Extension Orange County Exploration Gardens hosted by Extension Agent Clarissa Chairez. See unique plants in our 12 themed gardens and get ideas for your landscape. You will learn about Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ principles, smart irrigation, vegetable gardening, and flower species to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.

Adopt-A-Tree (In Person) 

Join our UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at UF/IFAS Extension Orange County, located at 6021 S. Conway Rd., for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents with proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or photo I.D. Each household is eligible to receive two trees, and the trees may be planted on the resident’s private property only. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable to flourish in Zone 9B.  
Saturday, April 29, 2023, 8:00am-12:00pm or until trees are gone, whichever comes first.  No pre-registration or fee to participate. 407-254-920
