At 11:00 AM today the National Hurricane Center issued a Special Tropical Weather Outlook to update information on the tropical system in the eastern Caribbean.
An Air Force Reconnaissance aircraft has found tropical storm force winds in a few squalls near the northernmost Leeward Islands. The reconnaissance aircraft is trying to determine if a tropical cyclone has formed.
This system could become a tropical depression or tropical storm at any time during the next few days while it moves west-northwestward at about 15 mph across the northern Leeward Islands, near or over Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Bahamas. Strong winds, heavy rains, and possible flash floods and mudslides are expected to occur over portions of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the southeastern and central Bahamas
The National Hurricane Center now estimates the probability of this system becoming a tropical depression or storm within the next 48 hours at 60 percent. The odds of tropical formation within 5 days is now 80%.
The next full update from the National Hurricane Center will be issued at 5:00 PM EDT.
