Traffic Signal proposed near Apopka High School

Posted

The City of Apopka has identified a busy roadway intersection in front of Apopka High School for needed safety improvements.

A recent traffic study shows about 13,500 vehicle trips each day on Vick Road near the intersection of Martin Street, which handles about 4,700 daily trips. Seven vehicle crashes were reported there between 2008 and 2013.

The City of Apopka currently is designing proposed improvements based upon the results of the traffic study.

A new traffic signal at the intersection will better control the flow of vehicles that drive through the area and will add pedestrian features. These features also would add a pedestrian crosswalk on Vick Road, improving safety for students who walk to school from the west.

Design work is expected to last at least two months, when the design proposal will go before the Apopka City Council for consideration. If approved, the city will issue a bid for construction to determine the cost and timeline for improvements. The proposed 2016 – 2017 budget had $250,000 set aside for this improvement.
