A trip down the Fox River: My rock is still there

Posted

As a little boy-kid exploring the Fox River 0F long ago, I noticed things that went unnoticed by less discriminating eyes.

A tree that had stood many years might fall in a storm, but there would always be others, though it might take many years to take its place.

Yes, always changing, never the same.

Not far downriver from our old homestead on the big island below Oswego, Illinois, perhaps 75 yards from shore, is my rock.

My rock... I call it that because nobody else has claimed it. My rock sits in silent repose, waiting.  What is it waiting for? I don’t know, perhaps another ice age, but it is patient, having waited in stoic silence since being dropped by the glacier that carried it there those many years ago.

If you want to see my rock, Go to Map Quest on your PC, scroll down the river from the Washington Street bridge in Oswego, Illinois, and journey down to the largest island, perhaps a mile downriver.

Remember, you are traveling down the river.  Perhaps halfway down the big island, start looking. You are close!
Remember to look out several yards from the island,

When you see a large, light-colored spot about the size of a baby grand piano, you have found My Rock!  I used to sit on that rock and fish over 80 years ago!

When you find it, let me know in the comments section below.

Oh, and by the way!  There is another rock worth searching for.  His name is Jesus.
And please, when you find him, let me know in the comments section below.

Charles Towne

Charles Towne is, first and foremost, a Christian. An octogenarian, author, journalist, wildlife photographer, naturalist, caregiver, and survivor, his life has been and continues to be, a never-ending adventure filled with possibilities never imagined. He has adopted the philosophy that living fully, laughing uproariously, loving passionately, and learning like there is no tomorrow, is a formula for a long and joy-filled life.
