Levity is not mentioned even one time in the bible, but lying surely is.
I was talking to my old buddy Dootsie Bobo the other day. (Yeah, he is still around.) And he told me that he is so disorganized, and his house is such a mess that the other day he was walking from the bedroom to the kitchen, and would you believe it, he got lost! And it took him three days to figure out where he was!
And then he told me that he was back in the big swamp the other day, and would you believe it, he got bit by a humungous, old diamond back rattlesnake about twenty feet long! The way he tells it, he knew he was going to die so he decided to accept the inevitable, laid down, closed his eyes and went to sleep. The next morning, Dootsie Bobo was surprised to wake up and discover that he was still alive! Yessir, he wasn’t dead after all! Then he looked around, and would you believe it, there were dozens of them big Florida mosquitos about the size of sparrows they were, and they was all laying on the ground, graveyard dead, they were. They had sucked out his blood, and that rattlesnake venom was so potent it killed every one of those skeeters! Saved his life, they did!
Now folks, to be perfectly honest with you, that is levity.
There are some folks that look upon lying the same way they do levity. But when we hear a tall tale, we know it. Yet, so often when we hear a lie, we take it for truth, and that can be very harmful to everyone involved. We need to be very careful about what we say about folks because the Word tells us that God hates a lie, and we don’t want to bring disfavor to our Holy friend, do we?
Father God, help each of us to always be careful of what we say about folks, because there are them that take what they hear as gospel, and we, as good Christian folks, don’t ever want to do hurt to one of your children. In Jesus' blessed name we ask it, Amen
