Slow-moving Atlantic storm could bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Florida this weekend

Apopka may see showers and breezy conditions as meteorologists monitor a developing tropical wind and rainstorm along the East Coast

Florida residents, including those in Orange County and Apopka, should be prepared for a spell of wet and windy weather this weekend as a slow-moving storm develops off the Atlantic coast. AccuWeather meteorologists say the system, which may strengthen into a subtropical or hybrid storm, will bring scattered showers and gusty winds to portions of Florida before moving north along the East Coast.

Although the heaviest rain, coastal flooding, and damaging winds are forecast to remain along the mid-Atlantic from North Carolina to New Jersey, the storm’s expansive circulation could push clouds and showers into Florida from late Friday through early next week. Local forecasters advise residents in Apopka to monitor conditions, as urban flooding in low-lying areas and gusty wind conditions could create hazards for drivers and outdoor activities.

“This storm is developing off the Georgia coast and is expected to move northward over the weekend,” said AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno. “Florida will likely see the outer bands first, meaning scattered showers and gusty winds.”

The storm’s hybrid nature means it draws energy both from the ocean and atmospheric fronts, making its structure more complex than a typical tropical storm. If the National Hurricane Center designates the system as a named storm, it would be called Karen, the next name on the 2025 Atlantic list. While Florida is not expected to experience the storm’s strongest impacts, the slow-moving weather system may still bring beneficial rain to the region after a recent dry spell.

AccuWeather meteorologists advise Floridians to monitor local forecasts and take precautions for heavy rain, including clearing storm drains and securing outdoor items that could be affected by gusty winds. Apopka residents should also be cautious near local waterways, as minor urban flooding is possible during peak rainfall.

Beyond Florida, the storm poses a greater threat to the mid-Atlantic, where coastal flooding, strong surf, and high winds could cause significant damage. Meanwhile, the tropical Atlantic sees Hurricane Jerry strengthening, though it is expected to stay east of Bermuda and away from the U.S. mainland.

For now, Florida residents should prepare for intermittent rain, breezy conditions, and a cloudy, unsettled weekend in Apopka as this slow-moving Atlantic storm begins to assert its presence along the southeastern coast.
