Yesterday afternoon Apopka police officers converged on the Apopka Walmart. No, they were not responding to a 911 call. This was a well-orchestrated annual event designed to help families in need.
Officers were paired up with a child and browsed around a local Walmart store, filling shopping carts with toys.
The children received everything from video games to bicycles.
Apopka Police say the event also helped build relationships between the officers and the community.
This year's Shop with a Cop paired officers with 70 kids from 39 families to purchase holiday gifts. The budget is about $100 per child.
Families were recommended by local schools based on their need.
Shop with a Cop is supported by donations from the community including the Apopka Women's Club, Breaking Point Mixed Martial Arts, United Methodist Church Of Apopka and the Apopka Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.
