Senior Resource Alliance – which helps local older adults maintain their independence and quality of life – has launched a new partnership with Honey’s Mini Therapy Adventures to bring equine services directly to older adults.
Miniature horses will meet with seniors in Central Florida care facilities and hospitals for specialized therapy that provides emotional support for anxiety, stress and isolation. Research indicates that visits can have additional benefits – such as memory recall – for people with dementia.
“This program provides more than a memorable morning; it addresses the rising rates of loneliness within our aging community,” said Karla Radka, Senior Resource Alliance’s President & CEO. “With every interaction, older adults who may have limited contact with their loved ones can experience a meaningful connection that reminds them that they’re not alone.”
The miniature horses undergo up to six years of training, know how to safely navigate around medical equipment and are certified through the American Miniature Therapy Horse Association.
“We’ve seen how a simple interaction with a miniature horse can bring back memories, spark connection, and comfort seniors who may feel isolated,” said Mary Rose Gullet, President & Founder of Honey’s Mini Therapy Adventures. “It’s powerful to watch someone reconnect with a part of themselves they thought was lost. This partnership allows us to expand that impact – bringing meaningful connection, emotional support, and moments of joy to older adults who need it most.”
The new program is made possible by funding from Independent Living Systems, which provides healthcare and social support to those in need in the Medicare, Medicaid, and Dual-Eligible markets.
“We’re proud to partner with the Senior Resource Alliance in their mission to support older adults and caregivers,” said Nestor Plana, CEO of Independent Living Systems. “Their work strengthens our community and helps ensure individuals can live with dignity, independence, and the support they deserve.”
