From the Orange County Newsroom and City of Apopka
In preparation for Thanksgiving, November 28th, adjustments will be made to curbside collection services for residents in unincorporated Orange County. During Thanksgiving week, Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.
Residents are reminded to set out their garbage, recycling, yard waste, and large items for collection by 6 a.m. on the day after their typical collection day: Friday, November 29th, or Saturday, November 30th. The regular collection schedule resumes on Monday, December 2nd.
For additional information, residents are encouraged to visit the website at www.ocfl.net/HolidayCurbsideCollection.
*****
The only collection holidays are Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November) and Christmas (December 25). When they fall on a regularly scheduled day, the collection will move forward by one day for the
rest of the week.
Thanksgiving
During Thanksgiving week, Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.
Christmas
During Christmas week, Wednesday customers will be serviced on Thursday, Thursday customers on Friday, and Friday customers on Saturday.
Christmas Trees
Live Christmas trees can be set out on your yard waste collection day. Trees over six feet should be cut in half. Remove the stand and all decorations before placing your tree at the curb. Remember, disposal by burning causes air pollution and is prohibited in Orange County. Find more information at www.ocfl.net/OpenBurningRules. Artificial trees that do not fit in the garbage cart can be set out for large item collection (the same day as yard waste collection).
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The holidays generate a lot of waste. Reduce, reuse, and recycle
when possible.
Holiday Waste Reduction Tips
- Use reusable bags on shopping trips
- Donate gently used items to local shelters or charities
- Use washable instead of disposable tableware at gatherings
- Repurpose cards by using them as gift tags next year
- Find resources online for recycling old holiday lights
Think 5 When Recycling
Remember to "Think 5" and only place these empty and dry items in the blue lid recycling cart: (1) plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs #1 – #5, (2) metal cans, (3) glass bottles and jars, (4) cardboard, and (5) paper. This includes seasonal items such as cardboard and gift boxes (please flatten), paper calendars, eggnog cartons, and holiday cards and envelopes that are not metallic or glittery and do not have a musical chip.
These items cannot be recycled in the blue lid cart:
- Plastic bags, air pillows, bubble wrap, and padded envelopes
- Check local stores for drop-off containers to recycle plastic bags, film, and wrap.
- Fireworks (used or unused) and cardboard firework tubes
- Soak in water, place in a sealed bag, and toss in the garbage cart
- Batteries
- Foam and packing peanuts
- Aluminum trays and pie tins
- Gift bags, tissue paper, and wrapping paper
- Toys
- String lights
