Orange Audubon Presents: Conservation of the Unique Wekiva Wild and Scenic River System

Posted

What are the exceptional qualities that earned the Wekiva River its designation as a national Wild and Scenic River, one of only two in Florida and 200 around the country? Ashley Konon, the River Ambassador for the Wekiva Wild and Scenic River system, will give a presentation for the Orange Audubon Society on February 20th and showcase the innovative programs and projects dedicated to preserving this river's beauty for future generations.

Konon has a degree in Animal Science from the University of Vermont. She has also been a zookeeper at three zoos and a kayak guide on the Indian River Lagoon. She is passionate about connecting people with nature through her work or hobbies, which include photography, kayaking, paddle boarding, painting, biking, and camping.

"To me, the river is all-encompassing," Konon says about Wekiva. "No matter your interest or background, there is something you will enjoy. If you like photography, there are multitudes of animals, scenery, and plant life for fodder. If you are interested in charismatic animals, we have bears and turtles galore. If you like insects and water quality, we have macroinvertebrate samples. If you enjoy relaxing and communing with nature, the Wekiva provides ample opportunities for that as well. The Wekiva is a place where people have come together for centuries, and my goal is to share this special place with others so that they can love and cherish it as the essential resource it is. "

In her role as River Ambassador, she focuses on conservation efforts and promoting the health of the Wekiva River system. Join us to learn about Florida’s only Partnership Wild and Scenic River!

The presentation is free, and you don't need to make any reservations.
The presentation is at Harry P. Leu Gardens, 1920 North Forest Ave., Orlando, 32803, in the Camellia Room on February 20th at 7 p.m.
