By Apopka Mayor Nick Nesta
Leadership means taking responsibility.
For years, Apopka residents were told the City had hired the best and that things were under control. But deferred maintenance, stalled projects, and aging roads and buildings told a different story.
Related: Nesta urges Apopka residents to find common ground and build a stronger community.
These problems did not appear overnight. They grew while past leaders failed to set clear priorities, follow projects through, and hold the organization accountable for results. Good intentions and impressive résumés are not enough. Leadership has to deliver.
I’m not blaming the employees who have kept serving Apopka through years of change. Many have worked hard without the support or tools they needed. The responsibility rests with the people who set the direction and had the authority to act.
In my first six months as Mayor, I’ve seen how much work was left undone. We’re reviewing how departments operate, where projects stall, what maintenance has been deferred, and whether employees have the tools and support to do their jobs. We’re also looking at how City Hall can use public funds wisely and follow through on its commitments.
I was elected to serve Apopka, and I have three and a half years left in this term. Some people would rather turn every issue into politics. I won’t play politics with City employees or the people we serve. Staff should be judged fairly on their work, and our decisions should be guided by what is best for Apopka.
This takes more than changing names on an organization chart. It takes clear expectations, capable people in the right roles, honest communication, and the willingness to address problems directly.
Residents have every right to be frustrated. They deserve more than explanations for why projects are late or repairs keep getting pushed back. They deserve to know who is responsible, what comes next, and when the work will be done.
We will not correct years of problems in six months. But we can stop accepting delays as normal. We can set priorities, track the work, and report honestly on our progress. That is the standard I expect from my administration.
Apopka deserves leadership that takes responsibility and gets results. My team and I are here to do that work and earn the public’s trust one project at a time.
