McKinley thanks Apopka

In a heartfelt farewell letter, Chief McKinley reflects on ten years of partnership, progress, and trust between the Apopka Police Department and the community he proudly served

When Michael McKinley became Apopka’s Police Chief in 2015, the city was growing fast, and the department faced challenges of size, staffing, and modernization. Ten years later, McKinley retires with the agency larger, accredited, and more connected to the community than ever before.

Michael McKinley, the Apopka Police Chief, wrote the following thank-you letter to the people of Apopka as he concluded his decade-long leadership of the APD.

To the Apopka Community,

As I conclude my tenure as Chief of Police, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to the residents, business owners, community partners, and leaders of Apopka for your unwavering support over the past ten years.

Serving as your Chief of Police has been one of the greatest honors of my 42-year law enforcement career. When I accepted this position in 2015, my goal was simple: to strengthen the bond between our police department and the community we serve. Together, we have made tremendous strides toward that goal. Through collaboration, transparency, and mutual trust, we have built a safer and stronger Apopka.

The progress we’ve made would not have been possible without the dedication of the men and women of the Apopka Police Department and the support of our residents. Whether through community events, partnerships with local organizations, or simply stopping to say “thank you” to an officer, your encouragement has meant more than words can express.

I also want to extend my appreciation to Mayor (Bryan) Nelson, the City Commission, and all City employees for their leadership and continued commitment to public safety. Your support has allowed us to grow, innovate, and better serve our community.

As I retire and pass the torch to Deputy Chief Lovetta Quinn-Henry, who assumed the role of Chief of Police on November 1, 2025, I do so with great confidence in the future of this agency. Chief Quinn-Henry is a dedicated leader who will continue to move the department forward with professionalism, compassion, and integrity.

Thank you again for allowing me the privilege of serving as your Chief of Police. It has truly been an honor to serve this great community.

With sincere gratitude,
Mike McKinley
Chief of Police
Apopka Police Department
