Once a powerhouse in Central Florida high school football, Apopka continues to search for answers after a 45-13 loss to Lake Mary on Friday night eliminated the Blue Darters from playoff contention.

The defeat highlighted familiar problems for Apopka, including turnovers, defensive breakdowns, and an inability to stop opposing offenses from building early leads.

The Blue Darters fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and trailed 31-7 at halftime. Quarterback Kai Goodling struggled against Lake Mary’s defense, throwing three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. A failed double pass also resulted in a fumble, further derailing Apopka’s offense.

Lake Mary capitalized on those mistakes, turning a competitive opportunity into a lopsided defeat.

These struggles reflect a larger rebuilding process for Apopka, which entered the 2025 season after losing more than 20 players to other schools and after longtime coach Jeff Rolson resigned. The program entered that season with just one returning starter, forcing it to rebuild much of its roster.

Signs of progress have emerged under coach Marcus Neeson, including a comeback win over Lake Brantley earlier this month. However, performances like Friday’s show how much work remains before Apopka can consistently compete against established programs.

Despite the deficit, Goodling connected with Nyzier Collington for two touchdowns, giving the Blue Darters an offensive bright spot.

At 3-5, Apopka’s playoff hopes are over, leaving one game against rival Wekiva as its final chance to end the season on a positive note.

For a program accustomed to competing at a high level, the question is no longer simply how to recover from one loss. It is how to turn flashes of progress into consistent performances and restore Apopka football to where it expects to be.
