As summer storms roll through Central Florida, power outages can become a sudden and stressful reality. Whether they last minutes or hours, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping your household safe, informed, and ready to respond.
Be prepared before the storm hits:
- Have flashlights ready – Place them in accessible areas throughout your home. Avoid using candles if possible, as they pose a fire risk.
- Stock up on batteries – Make sure your flashlights, radios, and other battery-powered devices are ready.
- Charge your devices – Keep phones, portable chargers, and battery backups fully charged.
- Keep a manual can opener – If you lose power, you’ll want to access shelf-stable food without relying on electric appliances.
- Secure important documents – Have them stored in a waterproof, easy-to-access location.
- Consider a backup power source – If possible, safely operate a generator outdoors and away from windows.
Knowing who to contact is critical. Most power providers offer multiple ways to report outages:
Duke Energy
• Phone: 800-228-8485
• Text: Text OUT to 57801
• Online: www.duke-energy.com
• App: Duke Energy Mobile App
Even once the lights flicker back, it is important not to rush things.
- Wait to use major appliances – Give your power system a few minutes to stabilize before running dishwashers, air conditioners, or other energy-heavy equipment.
- Check refrigerated food – If the power has been out for four hours or more, perishable food may not be safe to eat.
- Wait on wastewater – According to Orange County Utilities, residents should avoid draining bathtubs or running washers, dishwashers, etc., immediately after service returns, as excess wastewater can overflow sewer system pumps.
Storm outages are never convenient, but smart planning can help reduce disruption. Stay safe, stay informed, and check Orange County’s emergency updates at Orange County Emergency Information.
