In Summary:

Halloween Highway returns Wednesday, offering families a free drive-thru candy stop with costumed Apopka police officers. Earlier that day, the Development Review Committee will consider four applications involving a proposed warehouse use, residential plats, and a 16-unit multifamily development, followed Thursday by the Apopka Works for All Town Hall. Camp Wewa’s Tuesday climbing session and Saturday’s Team Gina 5K provide additional opportunities to get outdoors.

The road to Halloween runs through Station Street this week, where Apopka police officers will hand out candy instead of traffic citations. Across the city, the final days of October also bring development reviews, a community town hall, and a chance to lace up running shoes for a cause.

For the week of Oct. 26-31, Apopka’s calendar includes Halloween Highway, a Development Review Committee meeting with four applications, the Apopka Works for All Town Hall and the Team Gina 5K. Camp Wewa also offers an afternoon climbing session as its fall program winds down.

Tuesday: Climb Club at Camp Wewa

Camp Wewa’s Climb Club is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the rock climbing wall, 221 S. Binion Road. The city calendar lists a $2 drop-in fee and notes that registration is required.

The program is for participants ages 8 and older, according to the city’s fall program announcement. For information about registration, contact Camp Wewa at 407-703-1808.

Wednesday morning: Four projects on the DRC agenda

The Development Review Committee meets Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 9 a.m. in the City Hall Commission Chambers. Its agenda includes a proposed warehouse use, two plat applications and a multifamily residential project.

A first-submittal future land use amendment for 2525 Clarcona Road is listed under application FLU-26-7. Karuna Buildings LLC owns the property, and the agenda identifies a warehouse as the proposed use.

The committee will also review the first submission of a plat application for 860 E. Lisa Lane. The proposal would replat an existing 3.58-acre tract into 11 new lots to match an approved subdivision plan. Albert Iglesias is listed as the owner, with Kimley-Horn and Associates representing the application.

Crescent Ridge Phase 2 returns for a second review of its final plat application. The Pulte Home Company LLC project lists locations at 3744 Ondich Road and 5712 Ondich Road.

The fourth application is a second-submittal construction site plan for The Villas at Wekiva, proposed at 734 Piedmont Wekiva Road. The agenda describes a 16-unit multifamily residential development.

The applications are scheduled for review; their placement on the agenda does not establish approval. The meeting also includes a public comment period and time for discussion items.

Wednesday afternoon: Halloween Highway

Later Wednesday, families can head to East Station Street in front of True Coffee, 66 E. Station St., for the Apopka Police Department’s Halloween Highway. The free drive-thru trick-or-treating event runs from 4 to 6 p.m.

Families will remain inside their vehicles while officers dressed in Halloween costumes hand out candy as cars pass through. The event is designed for families, but organizers caution that candy supplies could run out before the scheduled closing time.

Thursday: Apopka Works for All Town Hall

The city has scheduled the Apopka Works for All Town Hall for Thursday, Oct. 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Apopka Community Center. The city describes the gathering as a workshop and directs residents to its calendar for details.

Friday and Saturday: Team Gina 5K

Halloween morning brings the Team Gina 5K to the large pavilion at the Northwest Recreation Complex, 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway. The race begins Saturday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 a.m., with runners and walkers supporting The Gina McReynolds Foundation.

Registration is required, and the city listing gives a $35 registration fee. Costumes are welcome, with prizes planned for the three best-dressed participants, but outfits should allow safe movement and unobstructed vision.

Packet pickup is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. lakeside next to the Apopka Amphitheater, and Saturday from 6:30 to 7:15 a.m. Parking will be available through gates 2 and 3.

Although it's listed on the city calendar, the City of Apopka does not sponsor the race. Questions can be directed to race@teamgina.org.
