Enjoy Halloween without harming your smile

Halloween is one of the sweetest times of the year, literally.

Children across the country eagerly fill their bags with treats, and parents do their best to help them enjoy the holiday responsibly. Halloween also coincides with National Orthodontic Health Month (NOHM), making it the perfect time to remind families how not to spoil their kids' smiles while enjoying the spoils of trick-or-treating.

So, what candy is safe for braces and aligners? Not all treats are created equal when it comes to orthodontic health. Sticky and chewy candies, like caramels, gummy bears, and taffy, cling to teeth and braces, increasing the risk of cavities and broken wires. Hard candies and lollipops can be just as damaging, as biting into them may bend wires or dislodge brackets. Instead, orthodontist-friendly treats such as plain chocolate, peanut butter cups, or soft cookies are safer options. These dissolve more quickly, leaving less residue behind.

Parents don’t have to take all the fun out of trick-or-treating to support good oral care. Here are a few other practical tricks for enjoying those Halloween treats:

  • Time candy with meals: Saliva production is higher during meals, helping wash away sugar and neutralize acids. Encouraging kids to enjoy their candy right after dinner reduces prolonged sugar exposure.
  • Rinse or brush soon after snacking: If brushing isn’t possible right away, swishing with mouthwash or even water can help clear sugars and food particles from around braces.
  • Set limits: Allow kids to pick a few favorites each day instead of grazing on candy throughout the week. This minimizes constant exposure and helps prevent plaque buildup around orthodontic hardware.

Halloween should be enjoyable without worrying about breaking braces or harming your teeth. With some simple adjustments, families can make sure orthodontic treatment stays on track while kids still get to enjoy their favorite parts of the holiday. Providers can reassure parents that it isn’t about saying “no” to candy—it’s about making smart choices.

And if you notice any issues with braces after the holiday, or simply want reassurance that everything is in good shape, scheduling a post-Halloween checkup with your orthodontist can provide peace of mind and keep treatment on track. Considering that nearly half of adults report a lack of confidence in their smiles, according to survey data, the small steps parents encourage now can help set children up for a lifetime of confidence and healthy habits. This Halloween, the best treat is not in the candy bag, but in the reassurance that families can celebrate fully while protecting their children’s oral health.
