Driving tours born of necessity during COVID-19 lockdowns still hold value

Tour #4: An iconic Apopka church with a rich history

Posted

Those early months of COVID-19 required so many adjustments on behalf of everyone. One of the areas most of us struggled with was being shut-in.

In Orange County, District 2 Commissioner Christine Moore wanted to help people with this restriction. She researched and created five different driving tours which were intended for people to use who wanted to get out of the house, but, maybe not out of the car.

The five tours included Central Apopka, Eastern Apopka (Piedmont, Wekiwa Springs, and Rock Springs), Lockhart, Northwestern Orange (Plymouth, Zellwood, and Tangerine), and Southern Apopka (Lakeville, Clarcona, and Tangerine), and they’re really a fun way to explore the history of District 2.

Here’s an example from the Central Apopka Tour:

Church of the Holy Spirit - “Little Church” and Historical Marker

The little church began as a simple rectangular wooden structure in 1866. Services were held until the Great Freeze of 1895 forced the congregation to disband. In 1902, the dilapidated building was purchased by sisters for a mission. In 1970, the church was moved to its current location.

ACTIVITY: Discuss the information on the marker and take a picture of the carpenter Gothic structure.

This holiday season might allow us to connect with family and friends the way we always did before COVID-19 entered our lives, and you may be looking for a fun activity with guests. The great part about the tours is they can be used with all age groups. Commissioner Moore made sure to include activities and locations that would interest everyone.

Take a drive to learn about a portion of our beautiful, historic Orange County - District 2. From environmental treasures to fantastic architecture, we have it all in this part of Orange County. These driving tours are free. A digital version is available at:  www.ocfl.net/District2. Go to Helpful Links and download all of them to learn about where we live.
