DOH-Orange recognizes National Radon Action Month

Posted

Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless noble gas produced from the radioactive decay of uranium found in soil, rock, and water. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, making it a significant public health concern, particularly in areas with high levels of uranium in the ground. Radon can accumulate in buildings, especially in lower areas like basements, where ventilation may be poor. Because it is a gas that is difficult to detect without proper equipment, homeowners are encouraged to test for radon levels to ensure a safe living environment. Understanding the risks of radon exposure is crucial for preventing and maintaining indoor air quality.

January is National Radon Action Month, and the Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) encourages residents to protect their homes and families from radon exposure. The best way for residents to protect themselves is to test their homes for radon.

In Florida, one in five homes tested has elevated radon levels. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and the largest source of everyday radiation exposure. Radon is considered a silent killer as it is colorless and odorless, making it impossible to detect when breathing it in.

There are ways to reduce high radon levels in a person’s home. The first step is to test the indoor air. The test is simple. To request a free radon test kit, visit Radon.FloridaHealth.gov
