Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson has endorsed Orange County Commissioner Christine Moore in the city’s April 14 mayoral runoff election, pledging to support her campaign and work with her to ensure a smooth transition in city leadership.

Nelson made the announcement days after finishing third in the March 10 municipal election, where Apopka City Commissioner Nick Nesta received the most votes to advance to the runoff, followed by Moore in second place. Nelson was eliminated from the race after placing third in the three-candidate contest.

In a statement, Moore said she values the work Nelson has done as mayor and intends to build on several of his initiatives if elected.

“I understand the value Bryan Nelson brought to the city, especially in growing fiscal strength, increasing high-paying jobs via recruiting new industry, removing red light cameras, and generating an Apopka Proud program of sports, music, events, and activities,” Moore said. “It is vitally important to grow on these successes from day one in office.”

Moore also said she plans to rely on the experience of current city staff during a potential transition.

“I also value and know that the current employees have years of valuable institutional knowledge to help me and my new executive team hit the ground running on day one,” she said.

Moore said her campaign includes a comprehensive plan to build on current city programs while addressing infrastructure, utilities, and other challenges facing the growing city.

Nelson said he intends to remain involved in the community and support Moore’s campaign during the runoff.

“I love this city, my lifelong home, and want to contribute any way I can to keeping it on the right path,” Nelson said. “Debbie and I have Apopka in our blood; we aren’t going away. With God’s grace, we will just have more time to help the community even more.”

Moore said she and Nelson plan to reach out to supporters in the coming weeks to encourage voter participation in the April 14 runoff.

“Apopka citizens deserve a smooth transition moving forward,” Moore said.
