Debate Teams Qualify for National Tournaments - Need Funding

Posted

The Apopka High School Debate Team is a relatively new endeavor, having been started only three years ago.

In competitions historically dominated by well-established and well-funded teams from other schools, Apopka is the perpetual underdog. Despite this, debate teams from Apopka High School have managed to qualify for nationals for the second year in a row.

At the end of May, AHS will be sending four competitors to Sacramento, California in order to be compete at the Grand National Tournament. This by itself would be a remarkable achievement for a new team.

However, Apopka is sending another team to Salt Lake City in June to the National Speech and Debate Tournament, the largest academic competition in the world and the most prestigious debate tournament in America.

Unfortunately, despite extensive school support and tireless fundraising efforts, the AHS Debate Team needs additional funds for the costs associated with attending the two major national tournaments. The team is appealing to the people of Apopka for support to help cover the expenses.

With the community's help, the team hopes to proudly represent Apopka in front of a national audience in just a few short weeks.

The Apopka High School Debate Team wishes to thank the following donors/partners who have helped us thus far:

  • Apopka Chick-fil-A
  • Apopka Northwest Chili's
  • The Central Florida Debate Initiative
  • The North Florida Catholic Forensic League
  • Kelli Mitchell of the Wekiva Debate Team
  • Nick Eagle
  • Holly Fussell
  • Stuart Swirsky
  • The Donaghy, Hamilton, and Uhlig families
  • All of the team members who have been selling candy on the weekends

Donations can be made directly to the Apopka High School Debate Team with check or cash. Donations may be mailed or presented at the school (555 West Martin Street, Apopka, Fl. 32712).
