Posted

The Apopka City Council, at its June 1st meeting, set the dates for the FY 22-23 Budget Workshops, and the Special Election for Seat #3 on the city commission.

Budget

The three-day workshops will be held on July 25th, 26th, and 27th beginning at 5:00 pm in the City Council Chambers each day.

In accordance with the final workshop, the regularly scheduled July 20th City Council Meeting will move to July 27th at 7:00 pm. The proposed property tax millage rate will be set at that meeting.

The Agenda for the three workshops was also set:

  • July 25th - Public Safety and Information Technology,
  • July 26th - Public Services,
  • July 27th - Community Development, Parks and Recreation, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, City Clerk, and Administration.

Seat #3 Special Election

The City Council also approved the dates and deadlines for the Apopka City Commission Seat #3 special election.

The seat will be vacant upon the resignation of Commissioner Doug Bankson, effective at the end of the day, November 8th, 2022. Bankson is running in the Florida House District 39 election, and therefore has to vacate his seat on the Apopka City Commission.

Pursuant to the requirements of the City of Apopka Charter, upon the resignation of a council member, if the unexpired term exceeds one year, a special election shall be held within 60 days, or as soon thereafter to comply with state election laws to fill a vacancy. Resolution No. 2022-26 calls for the Special Election to be held in conjunction with the Primary Election on Tuesday, August 23rd, 2022.

Should it be necessary, a Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022, in conjunction with the General Election.

The qualifying period for the Special Election shall begin on Monday, June 13th, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. and end on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. Qualifying by petition is not an option for the Special Election.

Early voting for the August 23rd election is from August 8th-21st at the VFW/Apopka Community Center. If there is a November 8th runoff election, early voting will be from October 24th-November 6th, also at the VFW/Apopka Community Center.

You must be registered with the Orange County Supervisor of Elections by July 25th in order to vote in the special election.
