City announces groundbreaking for new inclusive playground at the Northwest Recreation Complex

Posted

The City of Apopka Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new inclusive playground located at the Northwest Recreation Complex on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 3:30 PM. The ceremony will take place on the south end of the complex between the baseball fields and Wolf Lake Middle School. Parking for the ceremony will be located on-site at 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway in Apopka 32712, inside of Gate 1.

The new inclusive playground is being funded with City of Apopka Recreation Impact fees along with a generous donation by Unlimited Capabilities, a local non-profit organization who strives to “provide members of our community with special needs or disabilities opportunities that foster independence and community connection by offering recreational activities, scholarships, and sponsorships.” Unlimited Capabilities committed $110,000 towards the project with $100,000 of that total being donated by one of their long-time funding partners, the Halliday Foundation.

The new inclusive playground, designed with input from community partners, the Apopka Parks and Recreation Department, and REP Services, Inc. will include features such as a Zip-Krooz, Go-Rounds, multiple styles of swings, accessible pathways to the various structures, a sensory garden, and more shows the commitment by the City of Apopka to ensure its public parks and recreation spaces are accessible to all, regardless of age or ability. Plans for a new exit-roadway, additional parking, and sidewalks to service the playground are also in the final stages of planning.

“The City is excited to build this playground which will provide an inclusive environment for children of all abilities to play and grow together," said Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson. "It will be a great amenity for our families and the community as a whole."

Rep Services, Inc “a family-owned business dedicated to enhancing communities through thoughtful design and superior outdoor spaces” was chosen to design and build the new inclusive playground. Many of their designs and projects can be found throughout Central Florida, from Sanford and Lake Mary, to Orlando and Kissimmee.
