"If this had passed I would have rejected the move as I would not condone replacing an historical pioneer"

Former Apopka City Commissioner Bill Arrowsmith has withdrawn his name from consideration for re-naming Harmon Road to Bill Arrowsmith Parkway.

On his personal Facebook page Arrowsmith made the following post:

"Last week while on vacation out West I was informed that there was an agenda item at the City Commission meeting to change the name of Harmon Road to Bill Arrowsmith Parkway. If someone was trying to surprise me, it worked. I understand it was a very contentious meeting with the usual creeps blasting me. If this had passed I would have rejected the move as I would not condone replacing an historical pioneer (Harmon).

I served 39+ years as Commissioner/Vice Mayor of this great city and appreciate the gesture but have asked that it be removed from consideration at this time. I thank those that spoke in favor and apologize for the meeting conduct that you had to endure. Apopka Proud."

At Apopka’s July 19th City Council meeting, a resolution requesting Harmon Road, which connects Binion Road to Ocoee-Apopka Road and its extension that connects Ocoee-Apopka to Marden Road, be renamed Bill Arrowsmith Parkway.

The Council agreed to table the resolution until the August 16th City Council meeting.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated in future editions of The Apopka Voice.
