Florida State Representative LaVon Bracy Davis doesn’t mince words when describing her mission in public office.

“I’m here to serve the people,” she said. “Too many decisions are made to benefit the majority—not the people.”

Bracy Davis, who currently represents House District 40, is now campaigning for a seat in the Florida Senate. With a platform centered on affordability and public education, she’s positioning herself as a candidate deeply grounded in legislative experience and driven by a passion for equity and access.

Legislative wins despite partisan divide

Since entering the House, Bracy Davis has managed to pass two to three bills each legislative session, no small feat given the Republican supermajority in Tallahassee. She points to her work on the Children in Need of Services (CINS/FINS) bill as a highlight—calling it a “historic” piece of legislation aimed at supporting at-risk youth.

“I’ve been able to pass bills that matter even in a tough environment,” she said, emphasizing that bipartisanship, while challenging, is still possible when the focus stays on community impact.

A brotherly twist in the primary

Bracy Davis’s run for Senate includes an unusual element—her primary opponent is her brother, former State Senator Randolph Bracy.

While she declined to delve into the family dynamic, she was clear on her motivation: “I’m running for the people,” she said simply.

Campaign Priorities: Affordability and education

As she takes her campaign to voters across District 15, Bracy Davis says the rising cost of living is a central concern. Her goal, she explained, is to help get more money into the hands of everyday Floridians.

Education is another key pillar of her platform. While she doesn’t claim to oppose alternative schooling options outright, she strongly advocates for fully funded public education, as outlined in Florida’s constitution.

“I’m not anti-public school,” she said. “But the law says we must fully fund public education.”

Setting herself apart

When asked how she differs from others in the race, Bracy Davis pointed to her deep knowledge of the legislative process and her experience navigating complex political terrain.

She credits much of that growth to the mentorship of the late Senator Geraldine Thompson, a trailblazing lawmaker and longtime influence. Thompson passed away earlier this year, and Bracy Davis said her legacy is never far from her mind.

Policy views and legislative record

Bracy Davis has not shied away from controversial issues in the Legislature. She voiced strong opposition to a recent ballot initiative bill, aligning with critics who view it as a threat to citizen-driven democracy.

At the same time, she supported measures like HB 1405, a bill addressing medical malpractice, and what she referred to as the “free kill” bill, which expands wrongful death claims for adult children—an issue she described as deeply personal and long overdue.

I'm a fighter and I'm for the people"

Bracy Davis closed the interview with a message for voters: she’s not afraid to stand her ground.

“I’m a fighter and I’m for the people,” she said. “I don’t play political games. I’m a straight shooter.”

As the campaign continues, Bracy Davis hinted at a potential constitutional amendment effort to reinforce funding for public education—a nod to both her legislative priorities and the legacy of those who paved the way before her.

“I’m building on the foundation Senator Thompson helped create,” she said. “And I’m ready to keep fighting for what’s right.”
