Blue beats White in Spring Exhibition Game
Long touchdown runs by Jordan Thompson and Deshawn Massey broke open a 6-6 tie and propelled the Blue Team to a 21-6 win over the White Team in the Spring Blue and White Game for the split squads of The Apopka High School Football Team.
The game was played before a sprawling and enthusiastic crowd of about 500 fans at the Darter Spring Football Facility at Ponkan Park’s Football Field, located at The Northwest recreation Facility in Apopka. The fans sat in the bleachers, lined the fences around the field, lounged in lawn chairs and enjoyed the cool spring evening in a more casual environment than the regular season, which starts in September.
Quarterback Demetri Burch tied the game at 6-6 in the second quarter with a five-yard touchdown run for the White squad before Thompson scored on the very next play for The Blue to re-take the lead 14-6. Massey’s touchdown in the fourth quarter extended the lead to 21-6.
The modified format allowed assistant coaches to draft their own players from The Blue Darter roster. According to assistant coaches, it took them three hours to choose their teams. Despite no punting or kickoffs, the exhibition was played not as practice but as an actual game with time clocks and referees.
Their regular season starts August 26th at home against Ocoee High School. Last season The Blue Darters had a 10-2 record.
