Black Friday: Blue Darters and Mustangs suffer defeats

Lake Mary thrashes Apopka; Jones pounds Mustangs

Posted

Friday Night Lights became very dark for both area football teams, with the Apopka Blue Darters losing 49-21 to the Lake Mary Rams and the Wekiva Mustangs falling to the Jones Tigers 68-41.

Lake Mary 49, Apopka 21

The Lake Mary Rams continued its undefeated season with an overwhelming victory over the Apopka Blue Darters. Junior running back Isaiah Thomas scored four first-half touchdowns for Lake Mary, who took a 28-14 lead into intermission and cruised with three more touchdowns in the second half.

It was the first time Lake Mary defeated Apopka in six previous tries - including playoff losses in 2020 and 2022.

The Blue Darters fell to 5-3 on the season and 1-2 in the district. They travel to Orlando this Friday to face the Evans Trojans in their district finale.

Despite the loss, Apopka is still likely to receive an at-large berth in the postseason playoffs. Apopka has made the state finals in three of its last four seasons.

Jones 68, No. 14 Wekiva 41

Playing without its former head coach for the first time, the Wekiva Mustangs fell on Friday to the Jones Tigers 68-41. Jeremiah Rodriguez-Schwartz, Wekiva's leader since 2021, resigned the previous week.

The Tigers took a 10-7 after the first period and then went on a tear - scoring 24 unanswered points to take a 34-7 lead into the third quarter.

But before the game ended, Wekiva and Jones put up another 68 points between them.

The Mustangs fall to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in the district. They have a bye this Friday but then travel to Apopka High School on Friday, November 3rd, to face the crosstown rival Blue Darters in the Mayor's Cup.
