Apopka attorney Matthew Aungst announced on Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign for mayor, saying the decision was made to avoid dividing support among voters seeking reform and new leadership in the city.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Aungst said the decision was a difficult one but necessary to protect the city’s long-term interests.

“This is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made,” Aungst wrote. “But I committed at the beginning of this race to put our city’s long-term interests ahead of any personal political ambitions.”

Aungst said he concluded that remaining in the race could unintentionally contribute to Apopka continuing along a path he believes has limited its progress.

“I simply cannot, in good conscience, be the reason Apopka remains stuck in the same patterns that have held us back for far too long,” he wrote.

Aungst said his decision was driven primarily by the entrance of Apopka City Commissioner Nick Nesta into the mayoral race. He said both campaigns were drawing support from voters seeking reform, accountability, and a new direction for the city, creating the risk of a fractured electorate.

“In a fractured race, the danger is very real,” Aungst wrote. “Career politicians, whose records show they will not move Apopka in the direction it needs to go, could reassert and deepen their hold on power.”

He said he entered the race to challenge that status quo, but came to believe that continuing his campaign could undermine that goal.

“When I saw this risk clearly, I knew what had to be done — even if it meant setting aside my own aspirations,” he wrote.

Aungst also used his announcement to call for broader changes to Apopka’s governance structure, including consideration of a City Manager form of government, arguing that the city’s challenges extend beyond any single election.

“Our problems are deeper than any single election can address. They are structural,” he wrote.

He said long-term solutions require systems that protect the city’s future regardless of who holds office.

“This is not about trusting any individual,” Aungst wrote. “It’s about building systems that protect our future regardless of who holds office.”

Aungst urged residents to remain engaged and hold future leaders accountable, regardless of the outcome of the mayoral race.

“Whomever you choose to support, hold them accountable. Demand answers. Expect action,” he wrote. “Never let any leader forget who they serve.”

He acknowledged that his decision may disappoint supporters who invested time and resources in his campaign and thanked them for their trust and belief in his vision for Apopka.

“My withdrawal should not be interpreted as abandonment of my commitment to Apopka’s future,” Aungst wrote.

Aungst said he plans to remain active in civic life and continue advocating for reforms he believes are essential to the city’s progress.

“Sometimes, leadership means pressing forward against all odds. Other times, it means making a hard choice to step aside,” he wrote.

He closed by reaffirming his commitment to Apopka and its future.

“I am not giving up on Apopka. I am simply choosing a different way to fight for her.”
