*****
The year was 1882.
Queen Victoria ruled the British Empire, which was expanding its global reach by occupying Egypt. In the United States, Chester A. Arthur was president, Thomas Edison opened the nation’s first commercial electric power station, and New York City held its first Labor Day parade.
Florida was entering a period of railroad expansion and rapid growth in citrus production, while Orange County’s population was booming as newcomers established communities around rail lines, waterways, sawmills and orange groves. And Apopka, an agricultural settlement, officially became an incorporated town.
