From an earlier edition:

In the United States, the specter of gun violence looms large, casting a dark shadow over communities from coast to coast. With each tragic incident, the nation grapples with the profound impact of firearms on its society, reigniting debates over gun control, mental health, and the fundamental right to bear arms.

In 2024 alone:

  • 3,055 people have been killed by guns, 5,380 injured
  • 75 mass shootings, 9 mass murder incidents
  • Guns have killed 47 children under 11, 85 injured
  • 224 teenagers were shot and killed, and 533 injured
  • 14 police officers shot and killed in the line of duty, 73 injured

And certainly, Apopka is not immune to gun violence. At the typically quiet intersection of Myrtle Street and Lake Avenue, shots rang out Saturday morning.

According to the Apopka Police Department, at approximately 11:36 am, it responded to calls reporting shots fired, and upon their arrival, patrol officers discovered a 33-year-old male inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and is still in stable condition, according to the APD on Monday.

Apopka Police Chief Michael McKinley expressed significant concern about the shooting.

“The incident at Lake Avenue and Myrtle Street is deeply troubling," he said. "While it appears to be an isolated occurrence, the fact that someone would discharge a firearm at a vehicle in a residential area without consideration for the nearby residents is extremely concerning. During the incident, homes were hit by gunfire, presenting a grave risk to innocent bystanders who could have suffered severe injuries or worse. We express gratitude that the victim in this case did not sustain more severe injuries and, thankfully, no bystanders were harmed during this senseless act of violence. It is infuriating that certain individuals in our society resort to such violence, displaying a complete disregard for life and the consequences of their actions.

He also asked for the community's help in the ongoing investigation.

"Our criminal investigations unit is actively following up on the leads and information we have to bring those responsible to justice. If anyone in our community has information related to this crime, we strongly encourage them to contact the Apopka Police Department or Crimeline."
