The Apopka Police Department released the following statement about yesterday's car-jacking incident in the Shoppes at Wekiva Plaza parking lot:

"On Wednesday at approximately 7:58 pm, the Apopka Police Department received a call that a subject attempted to carjack or rob an individual sitting in their vehicle in the parking lot of the Shoppes at Wekiva Plaza, 1555 Rock Springs Road.

The subject pointed a firearm at the victim but fled after the victim refused to unlock and open the car door. The subject approached another victim in the same parking lot and attempted to enter that victim’s vehicle but was unable to due to the doors being locked.

The subject fled the area when he noticed that several bystanders were watching him. The suspect was described as possibly a juvenile dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask.

A perimeter was established, and a thorough search of the area was conducted with the assistance of Apopka Police  K9 and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office helicopter. Unfortunately, after an extensive search, the  subject was not located."

“We are extremely grateful that both victims in this case are safe and were not harmed," said Apopka Police Chief Michael McKinley. "Our investigators are working hard to canvass the area for possible video of the incident and to identify the subject involved. This is a great reminder that when operating a vehicle or sitting in it, you should always keep the vehicle doors locked. Constantly, remain alert to your surroundings, and report any suspicious persons or activity to your local law enforcement agency.”

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are asked to call the Apopka Police  Department at 407-703- 1757. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact CrimeLine at (800)  423-TIPS or email at www.crimeline.org

This is a developing story and will be updated by The Apopka Voice if more details are known.

I wish the police spokesperson would give us readers more details about this attempted robbery and/or carjacking suspect, such as maybe height, and weight approximately, possible race, whether he was white, black, Hispanic, oriental, etc. Why do they seem afraid to give someone's race? These factors might help us watch out for the suspect. Was it a medical mask, a Halloween mask, a ski mask, a full head covering......I mean, that might help. Was their hair showing? Was it long, short, what color hair? Also, the victims....was it a woman alone in the car, or were the two separate victims in the cars men? Give us more to go on. I am watching the news of these latest shootings that killed the reporter/photographer, the nine year girl, and the others. Senseless, and it is only going to get worse, when Governor Ron DeSantis gets his way, if his new gun laws prevail.

I am always reading of bad people stalking the various Publix grocery store parking lots looking for their next victim. It is not the store's fault, it is just those bad characters know that there are vunerable people there, and have their minds on shopping, and what to pick up for dinner, and not thinking about being a victim. I see so many poor old souls shopping alone, and think, I hope no one takes advantage of them, and grabs their purse, or confronts them. It is a dangerous world we live in nowdays, so much worse than in the past, and getting worse all the time.

I see there has been another sexual assault off of Hiawassee Road of a woman by a bus stop early in the morning. This male had a gun, and wore a mask, and was 5'3" or 5'4". I have to wonder could this male possibly be the one that was trying something in the RSR and Welch Road Publix parking lot? That was a male, had a gun, and wore a mask. Hiawasse Road comes through to Apopka. Maybe being that short, he could be a juvenile, as what they thought the suspect at Publix parking lot was???
