AAA: Florida gas prices jumped mid-week, then backed down

Price cycling is still driving these ups and downs at the pump. Prices drop, spike, then drift lower again, but overall, they remain below year‑ago levels.”

Mark Jenkins, AAA

Florida gas prices surged 9 cents midweek to a state average of $2.94 per gallon on Wednesday, then fell 6 cents to $2.88 by Sunday. Despite the sharp swing, drivers are paying just 2 cents more than a week ago and still less than they were at this time last year.

“Price cycling is still driving these ups and downs at the pump,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Prices drop, spike, then drift lower again, but overall, they remain below year‑ago levels.”

Sunday’s average of $2.88 per gallon is:

• 2 cents more than a week ago
• 4 cents more than a month ago
• 17 cents less than this time last year

Ways to Save on Gasoline

1. Combine errands to limit driving time.
2. Drive conservatively. Avoid aggressive acceleration and speeding, which reduces fuel economy.
3. Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
4. Shop around for the best gas prices in your community by using the AAA mobile app.
5. Pay with cash. Some retailers charge more per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
