5 Reasons Why You Need to Declutter Your Home Today

Posted

It was only just a few years ago that Marie Kondo swept the nation with her methods of cleaning and organizing a home. Her Netflix special and books have grabbed so much attention to the point people were following her tips and were only keeping items that “sparked joy”. Now there have been some debates on her methods, and it’s entirely up to the individual what they want to do with their own personal belongings.

With that said, it's still very important to declutter your space every now and then. Whether this space is your home or workspace, it’s been proven that clutter creates tension, stress, and a lack of comfort as well. So here are some reasons why you need to start decluttering today.

1. You've got way too much stuff

The key to decluttering your home is to take everything one at a time. Begin by taking all the items that you don't need or use anymore, then put them in one place. Once you've done that, move on to the next item on your list. You'll be surprised at how easy it is when you've got an end goal in sight. This also gives you a chance to rediscover what you own and maybe consider thinking about self-storage spaces where you can get your first month free storage. This helps you continue owning your items but not dealing with the clutter of it all.

2. You're not using it

A lot of people have a lot of stuff. But many people don't use most of their possessions to the fullest. Not using your possessions can lead to feelings of guilt and regret, especially when you're not getting the most out of them. It's worth spending some time thinking about how you could use your possessions more effectively. And sometimes, just by getting rid of it, you’ll feel better releasing it.

3. It's taking up room that could be used for something else

A lot of homes have an empty room where they just put their unused items. This gets curated long enough to the point where the room itself can no longer get used for its proper function (such as a guest bedroom). Removing this unused clutter can create a useable space.

4. Your resale value will decrease

The resale value of a home is often determined by its condition and how well it's been maintained over time. If you don't take care of your home, the resale value will decrease over time, as well as increase maintenance costs. But clutter can also decrease the value, such as having too much clutter outside on the lawn.

5. It makes cleaning harder and messier than it should be

Everyone knows the importance of using eco-friendly cleaning products in their home. But what’s the point if you don’t even have the space to clean due to all of the clutter? Clutter makes it constantly look messy, even when it’s not. It also makes it more difficult to clean.
